The Motion Picture Marketplace

The
past several years have been the most successful years in motion picture
history. Regardless of the dip in
ticket sales in 2011, we have seen the biggest box-office grosses and the
largest number of moviegoers ever. Over
600 feature films are released every year in the United States alone and almost
as many are produced for television, cable, and home video. This translates into a big demand for
scripts. The motion picture and
television industries are hungry for new material.
More
than 75% of households in the United States and Canada own at least one DVD
player. Home video has generated about
$26 billion from DVD and VHS annually.
$9.49 billion was taken in at the box-office. That means for every dollar spent at the box-office, $2.50 was
spent on home video. And that doesn’t
even include foreign distribution, cable and network television. The movie industry is more lucrative than
ever.
The
studios and producers are actively seeking good stories for films, television,
cable, and home video. Getting your
material produced, however, is a matter of writing something that has enough
substance and quality to interest producers, agents, studios, and broadcasters.
The
directors of Hollywood Writers Studio are in contact with the top film and
television production companies, motion picture studios, and networks on a
daily basis. They have their fingers on
the pulse of the industry (see affiliations and studio contacts).
New screenplays are needed
Producers and
studios are looking for all types of stories including action-adventure, love
stories, psychological thrillers, comedy, fantasy, sci-fi, crime, horror, family
drama, children's stories, historical dramas, and musicals. The marketplace includes theatrical motion
pictures, network television, cable television, syndicated television, and home
video. American movies make as much
money overseas as they do in the United States. Opportunities for writers couldn't be better. Most writers need professional help and
advice with their stories and manuscripts before they are able to sell
them.
Where do you stand? Are you having a difficult time getting your
stories or scripts accepted? Would you
like to find out why your material is not being bought, and what you can do to
fix it? Perhaps, with a little help,
you can overcome the obstacles and get on with your writing career. Hollywood Writers Studio can help you get
your material produced. Since the
Directors are currently active in the film and television industry, they know
what works and what sells in the marketplace.
The
producing arm of Hollywood Writers Studio (Joda Productions) produces
qualifying screenplays and teleplays.
No promises can be made that your material will be bought, optioned, or
produced by any production company, but material that shows promise will be
given serious consideration.
Purchase
prices of screenplays
The
average studio purchase price paid to new writers is $250,000 including
rewrites. A hot script can command over
$1 Million. Screenwriters can also
receive a percentage of the profits.
Screenwriters
generally get paid 2.5% of the production budget on modest-to-high-budgeted
productions, with a minimum guarantee and a maximum limit. The purchase price is generally 5% of the
production budget on low budget motion pictures.
